The work “2309” by Maria Paola Coda exists at the threshold between emergence and dissolution, constructing a pictorial space where light and matter coexist in restrained tension. The upper area of the canvas, dominated by veiled whites and greys, evokes a dense, almost silent mist in which form seems to both appear and fade simultaneously.
In contrast, the lower section introduces a base of dark greens, browns, and blacks, recalling the density of earth—organic, grounded, and sedimented. This duality is not presented as opposition but as a continuous transition, built through layered surfaces and translucent glazes that generate depth and a sense of pictorial time.
Far from literal representation, “2309” aligns with a tradition of abstraction that understands landscape as an interior experience. The painting does not depict—it suggests: a blurred horizon, a visual memory, a perception in flux.
Maria Paola Coda’s practice here is defined by an economy of means that intensifies sensory experience. The surface vibrates subtly, inviting a slower engagement in which the viewer’s gaze adapts to the rhythm of the work.
“2309” reinforces a coherent line of research within contemporary abstract art, where painting becomes a field of perception rather than an object. The work stands as a threshold—between the visible and the latent, the atmospheric and the material.
